Summer Food Service Program

Outreach Initiatives

Primary Partners

For many years, the Food and Nutrition service has worked with the School Nutrition Association (NSA), Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), and Feeding America to improve and promote the Child Nutrition Programs, including the Summer Food Service Program.

We established a working group comprised of these organizations in a united front to find new sponsors for SFSP. We want to thank SNA, FRAC, and Feeding America for their efforts to locate new sponsors and for their continued commitment to feed children throughout the summer.

SNA has been a longstanding supporter of the SFSP. SNA offers a variety of research information and resources for foodservice.

FRAC has been a continued for the Food and Nutrition Service's programs, especially the Summer Food Service Program. FRAC has a list of State advocacy organizations that can help you promote the program and outreach suggestions.

Feeding America is the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization. It has a network of 200 food banks and food rescue programs across the country. Food banks play a significant role in the SFSP by sponsoring the program, running a site and vending meals to your program. Contact the food bank partner in your State to see if a partnership can be established. 

Simplified Summer

If you did not become a sponsor because you thought there was too much paperwork, take a look at the SFSP today. The simplified procedures make it easier for all types of sponsors to provide meals to children in lower-income areas.

What's new for sponsors?

  • USDA has simplified reimbursement.

  • It eliminates cost-based accounting so that sponsors earn "meals times rates."  This makes calculating payments easier.   

  • There are no separate accounts and records of administrative and operating costs.   

  • There is no reporting of costs to the State agency.   

  • It simplifies paperwork for all participating sponsors.   

  • It lets school sponsors operate SFSP the same way they run their food service programs during the regular school year.   

  • It is available to schools, government agencies, residential camps, and National Youth Sports Programs.   

  • Contact the administering agency in your State to learn how you can become a sponsor.
